Editor's Note

The learning never stops!

It was nice to be in the company of 400 PE practitioners from 22 countries teaching in different international schools, sharing, learning and growing. I am grateful that 21st Century Learning has partnered with SPEA.  They have provided opportunities for PE Teachers to be part of this enriching learning experience at the PHASE conference held recently in Hong Kong.

I am delighted to see our fellow PE practitioners who are active in sharing their professional journey. The SG PE Team shared on a range of topics from student voices in affective learning, use of ICT tools, 21st CC, tech-enabled assessment tools and movement education through dance, contributing to a vibrant professional development event!

I am heartened to know that many colleagues have come forward to contribute to this newsletter based on the themes of Inquiry-based learning, E-Pedagogy and Inclusive PE. Going through each article gives me a sense of professional pride as I am encouraged by our colleagues' efforts to provide a meaningful learning experience for our students in sports and outdoor adventures.

The attempts to enhance the quality of the PE experience based on your contribution in the past two newsletters are a testimony of the professional growth and excellence in PE. Furthermore,  I am also delighted that our OPETA winners were featured this year in the Straits Times.

I hope you will spend some time reading the articles (Issue No.1 and Issue No.2) and that it will spur you to consider sharing your professional journey or the department's ongoing efforts to improve our students' PE experience.

Let's play an active role in our professional growth and contribute to the professional development of the PE and Sports fraternity, as our students deserve the best PE experience.

The committee have worked hard to provide opportunities for colleagues to share their professional growth, where we strive to promote good practices in PE and make this information more accessible to others.  We have taken a long-term approach to make the sharing of good practices a sustainable and fulfilling one. For more information, click here if you wish to consider contributing to this body of knowledge of good practices in PE in schools.

As 2023 ends, we hope you will take some time off to reflect, recharge and refresh as we continue to enhance our professional practice and provide a quality PE experience for our students. The learning never stops; may 2024 be another year full of enriching and fulfilling experiences.

I would like to share quote from an article, Ron Berger on the Power of ‘Beautiful Work’ | Edutopia,

“It’s a mindset of continuous improvement that makes for a great teacher: I’m going to keep getting better all the time; I’m going to keep improving my work as a teacher.” I think that a growth mindset is a trait we can cultivate…”

The article discusses the need to create time and space to work towards beautiful work. I would like to encourage you to step forward to share your beautiful work that you are doing in schools.

May you find time to enjoy the year-end holidays and Happy New Year in advance!
