President's Foreword (Nov 2023)

Since its founding by late Mr Lau Teng Chuan (our first President) and a team of pioneering Physical Education (PE) teachers in 1975, SPEA has been playing an active role in supporting the professional development of PE and Sport Teachers in schools. However, it was only in 1996 that the first Outstanding PE Teacher Award was presented to recognize the outstanding contributions that Physical Educators have made to the teaching, development and promotion of Physical Education, both within their schools and the wider PE fraternity.

In 2019, the first Outstanding Teacher-Coach Award was presented to set standards and recognize the outstanding contributions made by teacher-coaches in developing student-athletes in their respective sports or games in their respective schools. It also aims to encourage teacher-coaches to raise their level of coaching practice.

This year, we are happy to witness the presentation of awards to one Outstanding PE Teacher Award winner and one Outstanding PE Teacher Award (Merit) winner, as well as one Outstanding Teacher-Coach Award winner and 3 Outstanding Teacher-Coach Award (Merit) winners. Congratulations to all winners! We hope you will continue to grow and excel, while contributing to the professional development of the fraternity by generously sharing your experiences and ideas.

The mission of SPEA is to advocate excellence in physical and sports education in Singapore. We do this by working closely in partnership with our key stakeholders, including MOE – PESTA, MOE – Physical, Sports & Outdoor Education Branch, as well as NIE – Physical Education and Sport Science Faculty, supported by Sport SG, Olympians Singapore, institutes of higher learning, and some commercial organizations. It would not have been possible for SPEA to fulfil our mission, if not for the strong support and encouragement of all our partners. Thank you very much!

Finally, I would like to encourage all school PE teachers and sport professionals in the fraternity to join SPEA as a member and be part of our dynamic team to make things happen in Singapore. Wait no more!

Thank you.

Koh Yiak Kheng, Leonard

President
