Physical education (PE) is more than just a class; it's a cornerstone of holistic development, nurturing physical, mental, and social well-being. At ITE , the PE curriculum is carefully crafted to ensure students not only acquire essential skills and knowledge but also develop a lifelong commitment to active living. ITE College West PE department rolled out the curriculum through a comprehensive approach that integrates four key clusters—Gym, Swimming, Indoor Games, and Outdoor Games—the college aims to provide a dynamic and inclusive PE experience for all students.
The PE curriculum at ITE College West is driven by overarching objectives:
Acquire the skills and knowledge for a healthy body/mind and active lifestyle.
Engage actively in sports and recreational activities.
Imbue core values through sports and games.
Develop critical core skills (CCS) through physical fitness and activities.
These objectives serve as guiding principles for the curriculum committee, comprised of PE staff from all three ITE Colleges, who continuously review and refine the curriculum to meet evolving needs and best practices.
1. Gym Cluster
The foundation of physical conditioning, the gym cluster offers a diverse range of exercises to enhance strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. With an emphasis on proper technique and safety, students engage in activities such as calisthenics, weight training, cardio and circuit training. Team-based activities foster collaboration and sportsmanship, while the gym, the biggest amongst the 3 ITEs, provides a versatile space for structured workouts tailored to individual needs.
2. Swim Cluster
Recognising swimming as a life skill, this cluster focuses on teaching fundamental strokes, water safety techniques, and water confidence activities. From basic familiarity to advanced skills, students’ progress through a curriculum designed to cater to all proficiency levels. Aquatic games promote cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and teamwork while building confidence in the water.
All year 1 students from all the 4 schools (Business & Services; Hospitality; Electronics & Info-comm; Engineering) will complete the above 10 weeks program before being scheduled to the remaining 2 clusters mentioned below.

Through game play, this will help the students to promote fitness while picking up practical skills as well as to acquire and develop values through sports.
The PE curriculum at ITE College West is designed as a cohesive framework that balances variety, progression, and inclusivity. Beginning with foundational skills and concepts, the curriculum gradually advances to more complex activities and strategies. Clear learning objectives, assessment criteria, and progression pathways guide instructional planning and student development across levels. Flexibility is embedded to accommodate diverse learning styles, interests, and abilities, allowing students to explore different activities and pursue personal fitness goals. The above mentioned is further reinforced with the opportunities to ‘compete’ in inter-class and the College (i.e. Inter-school) games organised by the department.
