Every teacher has a story, but few are as dynamic as the journey of a physical education (PE) teacher. From the cacophony of bouncing basketballs to the quiet victory of a student mastering his first pull-up, my journey chronicles the challenges, lessons, and triumphs of a profession often underappreciated, but never insignificant.
The moment I realised my calling was during a chaotic softball session with a class of secondary 3 students who struggled to find joy in physical activity. When one hesitant, shy student connected his bat with a ball pitched to him, the whole class erupted with excitement, drowning him with praise and affirmation. That was when I saw firsthand the transformative power of movement. After that day, the whole class kept requesting to play softball for every PE lesson. It was no longer just about teaching skills; it was about instilling confidence, resilience, positivity, respect and the appreciation of teamwork – values that are foundational to character building.
Wearing the mantle of a PE teacher means fostering growth—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. It is about inspiring our students, from the star athlete to the child who fears PE and helping them discover and find their strength. My PE journey is defined by a career that’s devoted to empowering others through the gift of movement. Since my first posting to a secondary school, it has been a journey of trials, triumphs, and unforgettable moments.
The Outstanding PE Teacher Award I received in 2021 is a reflection of my students' enthusiasm and growth, which I attribute to my passion for teaching, strong focus on student engagement, and ability to create inclusive, fun, and meaningful lessons. Staying open to feedback and constantly seeking improvement opportunities contributed to my professional growth.
During the ebbs of my career as a PE teacher, I often felt frustrated and disheartened, whether it was dealing with disengaged students, challenging students, limited resources, or the undervaluing of physical education. However, I reminded myself why I started: to inspire students to discover their strengths and acquire values that are so critical as they progress towards adulthood. Every challenge became an opportunity to adapt, grow, and innovate. These moments reinforced my passion, teaching me that resilience and creativity are as essential for educators as they are for the students we guide.
A common stereotype is that PE teachers only focus on sports and lack academic rigor. I have worked hard to change this by integrating fitness education, promoting holistic development, and emphasising life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and discipline, showing that PE is essential for both physical and mental growth.
The greatest joy of being a PE teacher was witnessing my students' physical and mental growth. It was incredibly fulfilling to watch them gain confidence, develop teamwork skills, and push beyond their perceived limits. Seeing students who once struggled with personal and family issues find their stride and achieve personal milestones through sports brought immense pride and joy. Beyond their athletic abilities and achievements, to just be involved and to witness their physical and mental growth was a reward in itself.
One piece of advice I wish I had received when starting my educator's journey was prioritising building relationships with students. Establishing trust and understanding creates a foundation for meaningful learning and engagement. Students thrive when they feel seen, heard, and supported. Additionally, I would have appreciated a reminder to embrace flexibility and patience—every student learns differently, and progress often takes time. Celebrating small victories and remaining adaptable in teaching approaches are key to long-term success. Finally, never stop learning, staying curious and seeking growth benefits you and your students.
