Event Report - 2023 SPEA AGM

It’s always a refreshing change to meet fellow PE teachers, old and new, in an informal setting, where we can all chat and have fellowship over dinner and reminiscence about the good times over the years and recognise our pioneers in the fraternity. Well, that’s what happened during the recent 44th SPEA Annual General Meeting held at the Ministry of Education Sports & Recreation (MESRC) 21 Evans Road clubhouse on 29 March 23.

Immediately after whetting our appetites and satisfying our gastronomical desires, we consumed food for our intellectual and professional work by interacting with two academics. The first, Mr Guo Ming Ming, a Visiting Scholar with PESS, NIE, NTU, shared his work on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors among Chinese Children and Adolescents in the Past Five Years in China. He reminded us that to combat the growing threat of sedentary behaviour among the general global populace, purposeful physical activity patterns must be established to arrest this worrying trend. We then had a practical and interactive technologically infused session on The Potential of Augmented Feedback to Improve Jumping Power and Technique by Mr Muhammad Shufi Bin Salleh, a Teaching Fellow with PESS, NIE, NTU. He showed us how ICT can propel teaching and learning in the PE classroom.

Our President, Mr Leonard Koh Yiak Kheng, then shared the Annual Report.

The Management Committee has been working tirelessly to increase the membership and membership benefits of the Association and has conducted Workshop on International Mindedness Through Sports and Games and Workshop on Introduction to Teqball, apart from organising and hosting the EW Barker Public Lecture by Prof Cliff Mallett. The Publications Committee had also revamped the SPEA Newsletter and introduced a new social media presence for the Association to reach a wider audience of PE teachers and sports coaches.

He concluded his address by thanking all members who had contributed to the activities successfully organised by the Association. Ms Helen Low Kwee Fong was elected Honorary Treasurer, while Ms Stella Yap Sze Hui and Mr A Murugapa were elected Honorary Auditors for the current year. Finally, members in attendance presented and approved proposed amendments to the SPEA Constitution. This will be sent to the Registrar of Societies for confirmation.
