Updated: SPEA Newsletter 2024 Issue No. 1 (June/July)
To mark the new phase of development for the Singapore Physical Education Association (SPEA) in commemoration of its 50th anniversary in 2025, the Association embarked on a re-envisioning exercise to refresh its vision, mission, and values (VMV). Held on 28 November 2023, the exercise brought together members of the Management Committee (MC) to reflect on SPEA's past contributions and articulate aspirations for the future.
The re-envisioning exercise began with a learning journey to the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) , where participants engaged in dialogue around youth sports development, innovation, and future-ready competencies. This visit set the tone for a forward-looking reflection on the evolving role of physical education in Singapore's education landscape.
The team drew inspiration from the lessons learnt at NYSI to refresh and refocus the SPEA's vision and mission so that our Association will continue to bring more value to our members as we build a community of PE professionals.
The main segment of the re-envisioning workshop invited participants to revisit the Association's identity and purpose with the following critical questions:
What is our true value proposition as a PE association?
What do we truly stand for?
What are we accountable for?
What do we hope to achieve in the next 10–20 years?
Discussions acknowledged SPEA's rich legacy, including its contributions to professional development, sharing of best practices, recognition of excellence in PE and sports development, and collaborative outreach locally and internationally. Participants also celebrated members' trans-educational expertise in PE, OE, and sports, as well as SPEA's long-standing efforts to foster partnerships for the benefit of members. A thorough review was conducted on our current vision and mission statements and their relevance in meeting today's and future needs of our members and fraternity.
As a result of the re-envisioning, the Association affirmed the need to update its vision, mission, and values to better reflect its commitment to professional excellence in a dynamic educational environment.
Vision: To promote professionalism in Physical Education and Sports
Mission: To raise the standard of Physical Education and Sports in Singapore
Core Values: Professionalism, Passion, Perseverance
After several rounds of discussion, the proposed vision and mission were presented:
Vision: A community of inspiring and innovative PE and sports professionals
Mission:
Strengthening professionalism
Promoting quality education
Embracing diversity
Appreciating the fraternity
Core Values (unchanged):
Professionalism
Passion
Perserverance
The proposed vision and mission were presented and accepted at the SPEA Management Committee Meeting on 19 February 2024 for adoption with effect from 2025.
This renewed VMV reflects a bold and intentional repositioning of SPEA as a dynamic hub for leadership, learning, and advocacy in the PE fraternity. The Association is poised to release the refreshed VMV officially in the second half of 2025 as part of its 50th-anniversary celebrations.
As SPEA looks ahead, it remains grounded in its heritage while embracing a future where physical education plays a vital role in shaping confident, resilient, and future-ready learners.
