It was a night of celebration, laughter, and recognition as over 260 members of the PE fraternity gathered for the Singapore Physical Education Association (SPEA) 50th Anniversary Dinner & Awards Ceremony on 19 Sept 2025. Held at the Summer Garden Restaurant at SAFRA Mount Faber, the evening marked not just five decades of SPEA’s contributions to PE in Singapore, but also the achievements of outstanding teachers and coaches who continue to inspire students through sport and physical education.
Honouring Professionalism in PE and Sport Education
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Outstanding PE Teacher Award (OPETA), the Outstanding Teacher-Coach Award (OTCA), and, for the first time, the Outstanding SPED PE Teacher Award (OSPETA).
Guest-of-Honour Ms Liew Wei Li, Director-General of Education (MOE), presented the awards and commended the winners for their passion, innovation, and professionalism. She also highlighted the significance of the new SPED PE Teacher Award, recognising the essential role of PE in the holistic development of students with special educational needs.
DGE also reminded PE teachers of their unique responsibility: to battle the rising tide of screen time and to spark a love for physical activity through innovative PE lessons, unstructured play, CCAs, inter-class games, and outdoor camps. “We need to get them out there to move and love moving — for their physical, mental, and social health, to raise their resilience and strength,” she said.
This year’s awardees included:
Outstanding PE Teacher (Merit):
Mr Ong Wei Loon Daryl (Fuhua Primary School)
Outstanding Teacher-Coach Awardees:
Mr Nicholas Ong (Maris Stella High School – Softball)
Ms Denise Yap (Xingnan Primary – Badminton)
Mr Muhammad Iqbal Bin Mohd Sharifuddin (Raffles Institution – Football)
Mr Yeo Eng Wee (Raffles Girls’ Primary – Basketball, Merit)
Outstanding SPED PE Teacher (Inaugural):
Ms Koh Phey Serh Maria (Rainbow Centre)
Their inspiring stories, from transforming recreational CCAs into thriving programmes to utilising sports science and educational technology, drew rounds of applause and admiration from those present at the dinner.
Celebrating 50 Years of SPEA
The dinner also provided an opportunity to reflect on SPEA’s 50-year journey. Founded in 1975 by pioneering PE teachers, SPEA has grown into a respected professional body, complementing MOE’s Physical Education & Sports Teacher Academy (PESTA), Physical Education, Sports and Outdoor Education (PSOEB) and working closely with NIE’s Physical Education Sports Science (PESS), SportSG, Coach SG, ITE, Polytechnics and schools.
Over the years, SPEA has championed professional development, brought experts together to set high standards in PE, and provided recognition to those who inspire the next generation of learners.

More Than Just Awards
But the night was not just about awards. It was also about camaraderie. PE Teachers, coaches, and partners gathered over dinner, reminiscing about old times and sharing hopes for the future of PE in Singapore. From inspiring speeches to spontaneous laughter, the event served as a poignant reminder of the strong community spirit that unites the PE fraternity.
We would like to thank DGE, Ms Liew Wei Li, MOE Advisor, our honorary member, Mr Wong Siew Hoon, members, colleagues, sponsors, award winners and their supporters for your presence.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate the achievements of this year’s winners and SPEA’s 50th milestone, the message was clear: PE is more than just about sports. It’s about nurturing resilience, joy, and lifelong health in every student. With passionate educators leading the way, the future of PE in Singapore looks strong, inclusive, and full of possibilities.
