Presentation by SPEA at the Annual National Academic Convention in Thailand
Responding to an invitation from the Thai Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (TAHPER), Mr Leonard Koh, President of SPEA, represented the association to deliver a presentation on "Quality of Physical Education in Singapore" at the Annual National Academic Convention. The convention was held at Kasetsart University, Kampangsaen Campus in Thailand from 12 to 14 November 2025.
In his presentation, Leonard shared the training and development approaches for PE teachers in Singapore, as well as the supporting organisational structures provided by the Ministry of Education. He examined the trends, issues and progress relating to Physical Education since the establishment of the Teachers' Training College in 1950 and the Singapore Physical Education Association (SPEA) in 1975.
Leonard went on to explain in detail how Singapore schools have grown in capacity to customise the PE curriculum to match the changing needs, focus and emphasis at each developmental phase of Singapore's education system. He traced this evolution from the laissez-faire arrangements showing a lack of emphasis in the teaching of Physical Education before Singapore's independence in 1965, to the current state of strong emphasis articulated through clear guiding frameworks for PE and Sports Development and PE Curriculum. Complementing these frameworks are clearly defined PE syllabi for each educational level (Primary, Secondary and Pre-University) and the desired key attributes expected of students at the respective levels.
The presentation concluded with thunderous applause from the convention organisers, participants and invited speakers who had flown in from China and Vietnam. Many were impressed with the strong support given by the Ministry and the professional organisation (SPEA), which have resulted in the development of highly competent PE teachers in Singapore.
